We at IGIA embrace the concept of sustainability by managing environmental needs effectively, by minimizing resource utilization, by adopting green infrastructures and by improving operational excellence.
IGIA works in various fields to minimise the environmental impact of its operations. Noise abatement is one of the key areas the airport is focusing on. In order to reduce the aircraft noise, IGIA along with stakeholders such as Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air Traffic Controller (ATC), Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have implemented various noise mitigation measures.

The followings are the various noise mitigation steps taken by IGIA:

  • Distribution of aircraft movement which has been done in the form of mixed-mode operation of the runways that provides benefit from noise experienced by a particular region;
  • Continuous Decent Approach (CDA); noise complaint system;
  • Restricted operation of chapter-2 aircraft (old aircrafts) and
  • Automatic aircraft noise monitoring System in all the approach of runways to monitor noise levels around airport and enable to identify noisy aircrafts.

All the above measures are implemented to managing the noise aspect successfully at IGI Airport. To lodge a complaint regarding Aircraft noise in your area please call us at 011-47198600
Air quality management & Emission reduction are focused areas at IGI Airport; Organization has taken various initiatives to improve air quality management and reduce emissions. To manage the air quality at IGIA, IGIA monitors air quality on regular basis. Air quality monitoring is done for parameters such as Suspended Particulate Matter(SPM), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Hydrocarbon (HC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) & Ozone (O3).
  • IGIA has initiated various measures on emission reduction which include working on emissions from Aircrafts, Vehicles, Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and Ground Power Unit (GPU). To reduce the APU and GPU utilization, IGIA has installed Fixed Ground Power Unit (FGPU) facility in its New Terminal T3.
  • IGIA also initiated Green House Gas inventory program. It also facilitates employees to reduce their carbon foot print by carpool network initiative.
  • Integration of Green & Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Infrastructures.
  • By adopting Airport Collaborative Decision Making (ACDM) system and mixed mode operation in all runways aircraft delay and related emissions are reduced. As a part of emission reduction initiative airlines are advised to start the engine after getting permission from Air Traffic Controller (ATC). This will reduce substantial emission load at IGIA.
  • IGIA have installed dedicated CNG fueling station at airport, all airside vehicles use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce the carbon emission load.
Water is one of the key elements required for the efficient, hygienic and customer friendly airport operation. Our Objectives:

  • Sustainable development and management of water resources by continual assessment, conservation, augmentation, protection from pollution and safe distribution.
  • Encourage water conservation by employee engagement, rainwater harvesting, consumption reduction & reuse of treated water.
IGIA has taken various initiatives towards sustaining water resource at IGIA. IGIA has set up advanced water treatment plant to provide good quality water to passengers in Terminals.

  • IGIA has installed 15 MLD plant to treat and reuse the wastewater for various purposes. This state of the art Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has been designed and operating to achieve zero discharge and reduce water consumption. Treated wastewater is being used for HVAC makeup, toilet flushing and landscaping purposes which help in reducing and optimizing fresh water demand.
  • IGIA have installed rain water harvesting wells in the storm water drains to improve water resource availability in the region.
  • Use of low flow fixtures and appliances for reduced water consumption such as low flush water closets and cisterns.
Cleanliness & proper waste management is extremely important in achieving high quality standard and safety measure against bird strikes. Organization works exclusively with waste management companies which employ the highest environmental standards to handle different kind of waste streams.
Our objective is to ensure effective waste management system for collection, segregation, storage and safe disposal of waste and comply with all regulatory requirements.

Waste such as Municipal Solid Waste, Hazardous Waste, E-Waste, Construction and Demolition waste are handled and disposed as per the legal framework. IGIA regularly checks to ensure that these standards are maintained. Training and Awareness to the all stakeholders on Waste Management and Environment Management System are regularly provided. Waste papers are being sent to recycling unit for the waste paper reuse.
Environment Management System (EMS) at IGIA is certified as per ISO 14001:2004 since 2009 by M/s DNV-GL. EMS provides an organized and formal approach towards managing environmental aspects and its impacts at IGI Airport. IGI Airport is also certified by M/s DNV-GL for ISO 14064:2011 for its “Greenhouse Gas and Carbon Emission Management” practices and management. IGIA also achieved Level 3 (Optimization of GHG Emission) accreditation by Airport Council International (ACI) for IGI Airport.

Our Objectives:

  • Ensure all pollution prevention measure is adopted with sustainable infrastructure during the process
  • Ensure stakeholders participation in the airport development programs and environmental achievements
  • Communicate various stages of airport development programs to stakeholders and sustainability demands at IGIA
  • Assess and manage all possible potential environmental aspects and impacts that organization shall encounter (internal and external)
  • Train & educate the members on environment management requirements.
Extensive flora and fauna studies have been undertaken to determine the biodiversity values that exist within the airport boundary. The findings have been further supplemented through additional studies that are being undertaken as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Animals are rehabilitated with the help of wildlife and forest department and NGOs to various Wildlife Sanctuaries of Delhi.
IGIA has carried out proper landscaping and extensive tree plantation along with the construction activities at airport. Trees have been planted around the water bodies of Delhi. A very intensive and dense landscaping works have been carried out at the IGI Airport, using thousands of medium to big shrubs and trees as per master plan. IGIA has planted trees around various water bodies of Delhi. Entire landscaping is irrigated with water conserving irrigation system with treated waste water. Automatic irrigation system with dedicated pipe line network is laid down around the airport to facilitate the treated waste water usage.
Various emission reduction measures have been applied and installed to achieve our objective. According to IPCC report 2005, aviation sector contributes approximately 2% of the world’s anthropogenic (human-made) CO2 emissions.Organization addresses its climate change mitigation through proactive Energy & Environmental Management Systems with in-built Green infrastructures (LEED-NC GOLD rated infrastructures), which enable us in aligning the leadership focus & enhance our capabilities to mitigate climate change impacts.
IGIA also certified for Green Company (GreenCo) to Gold Level organization by CII for showing commitment in improving environmental objectives on energy, water, GHG, renewable energy, waste management, material recycling, green supply chain, LEED infrastructure and innovations.

Our Objectives:

  • Reduce GHG emissions from Airport functions
  • Encourage renewable and alternative energy sources
  • Support National Action Plan on Climate Change and International Civil Aviation Requirements on Climate Change

IGIA has implemented many more initiatives aimed at reducing GHG emission such as renewable energy generation by 2.14 MW Solar PV and SWHS, usage of LED lighting systems, Fixed Electrical Group Power (FEGP), energy efficient HVAC system, CNG vehicles operation, battery operated vehicles, Fuel Hydrant systems, Multimodal Connectivity, Energy Conservation Measures in all areas of IGIA are resulting in carbon emission reduction and natural resource conservation. IGIA is certified under ISO14064 and Airport Carbon Accreditation to Optimization Level by ACI for GHG accounting.
